  16. <p>California battles a wildfire in the land of Mark Twain and
  17. Bret Harte
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Calaveras County was once the heart of the Gold Rush. This
  20. August the rush has been for the exits. Stubborn forest fires
  21. swept through drought-stricken timber and brush, threatening a
  22. score of scenic small towns, once made famous by Mark Twain and
  23. Bret Harte, and forcing nearly 14,000 residents to flee. Nearly
  24. 4,000 fire fighters labored throughout the week, bringing the
  25. flames under control just as another wildfire broke out in
  26. Northern California's Shasta County.

  28. <p>     Several hungry fire fighters who tried to use state-issued
  29. meal vouchers were turned away by local restaurant owners who
  30. didn't trust the budgetless state government to pay their bills.
  31. "It's understandable," said Lisa Boyd, spokesman for the state
  32. Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, "but no fire
  33. fighters are going hungry." Other Calaveras County restaurants
  34. were willing to take a chance and feed the exhausted smoke
  35. eaters.
